A class action lawsuit alleged that the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) violated Pennsylvania privacy laws by using tracking pixels on its patient portal website to share patient information with third parties — including Meta, Google, and others — without patient consent. UPHS has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $9.25 million settlement to resolve these alleged claims. In addition to the cash fund, UPHS agreed to suspend the use of analytics and advertising technologies on its website for two years unless its Web Governance Committee determines such use complies with applicable laws.
Eligible claimants may receive an estimated $15, representing an equal share of the net settlement fund. The actual payment amount will vary depending on the total number of valid claims filed and is not guaranteed.
